Nizhni Novgorod is an important cultural, educational and industrial centre, and the names of the people, who played a significant role in the history of Russia and the whole world, are closely connected with it. Among them is a great opera singer F. Shalyapin, a famous poet A. Pushkin, a scientist and active public figure A. Sakharov, a 2003 Nobel Prize winner in Physics V. Ginzburg.

It is a home town of a great Russian mathematician N. Lobachevsky, after whom the main university of the city – N.I.Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod – is named.

Nizhni Novgorod is one of the five greatest cities of Russia and has a population of around 1.3 mln. It is situated in the European centre of Russia on the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers 439 km to the east of Moscow. The convenient geographical location of the city is the key factor of its economic and social growth.

The climate is temperate continental. The average mid-afternoon temperature in January is about -8С, and in July about +24С.


Nizhni Novgorod was founded in 1221. There are numerous unique historic and architectural monuments in the city, which gave grounds to UNESCO to include Nizhni Novgorod in the list of 100 cities of the world which are of great cultural value. Picturesque Russian landscapes attract a great many of tourists from different parts of the world.

In Nizhni Novgorod you will find a lot of opportunities for an interesting pastime – cinemas, entertainment centres, night clubs, restaurants, stadiums, well-equipped sport and fitness centres, swimming pools and so on.



There are eight theatres including the Drama Theatre, TUZ (Theatre of the Young Spectator), Comedy Theatre, Opera House, several chamber and symphonic orchestras, ballet and dance groups. Nizhni Novgorod State Philharmonic Hall named after M. Rostropovich is worldwide known among all judges of classic music. Russian and foreign musicians regularly put on concerts here.

An old Russian town with a rich history, Nizhni Novgorod is now a modern European city which provides rich opportunities for work, studies and vacation. It is a city with a well-developed infrastructure including underground network, a great number of hotels, cultural and entertainment centres. Through the international airport, river port and railway Nizhni Novgorod is connected with other cities of the country and of the world.
